I'm probably one of many people who struggle with spirituality because they can't get past the "God question." The God we hear about seems too judgmental or even mean. God may sound like a relic of outdated superstition. We may shy away from thinking about a God who spies on our private pleasures. You may feel God doesn't listen to you, or you can't hear God, or both. Or maybe you've gotten along just fine without God, so why bother with all this spiritual stuff?
Well, I've come to the conclusion (startling to me) that you don't need to know who or what God is -- or even if God exists -- in order to recognize and cultivate your own spirituality. You experience the fact that there is a non-material part of your reality every day. You don't need to turn to God or gurus or books to find this spirituality in yourself. And this Human Spirit is more than just ethical behavior. It is a miraculous gift, wherever it comes from. If we ignore or neglect this miraculous gift of the Human Spirit, we limit the possibilities for a truly rewarding life.
I've been elaborating on this idea more recently on a newer blog, Feed Spiritual Hunger. I invite you to visit that blog ((see link at the top of the left-hand column), or to e-mail me at RationalFaith@comcast.net if you have comments or questions.
